PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release
As part of the Global Day of Action on Military Spending, members of Alamance Peace Action will hold a vigil to protest excessive Pentagon spending. The vigil will take place from noon to 1 pm at the U.S. Post Office on Maple Street in Burlington. Leafleting to those mailing in their income taxes will also go on mid-day.
The U.S. military budget is by far the world’s largest and exceeds the next 10 largest military budgets combined.[i]
Alamance Peace Action members will give out leaflets stating that 40 cents of every Federal income tax dollar paid goes to the Pentagon.[ii] According to National Priorities, the average North Carolinian will pay $2,528 to the Pentagon in Federal income taxes when filing this year.[iii] This amount does not include veterans’ benefits.
“Giving top priority to the Pentagon involves the U.S. in endless wars. It also impacts Americans locally. In Alamance County, we’ve lost teachers’ positions; we lack public transportation and need more job programs and services for veterans,” said Anne Cassebaum, one of the group’s leaders.
The group want citizens to be aware of what their tax money supports to ensure it represents their values and priorities.
